Tundraland & Green Bay Packers Alumni Surprise Military Families

This is the story of two families. Two families that drastically needed bathroom updates, as their current bathrooms no longer fit their needs. Adam Guess of Madison, Wisconsin is a third generation Marine and a single father of two daughters. Bonnie Zak of De Pere, Wisconsin is the wife of the late Robert Zak, a courageous veteran and also a father of two daughters. When we heard their stories, we knew we could make a positive impact in their lives through our Tundraland Cares initiatives.

Did we do great work on your home? We’d love if you shared a review of your experience!

Adam Guess recently experienced one of the hardest years of his life, with the loss of both his Father and Brother within one year. On top of it, Adam is a single father to two beautiful daughters. Adam’s youngest is Natalie. She is 14 with a love for volleyball and her family. Anna, 15 and was born with Rett Syndrome. Rett’s is an extremely rare genetic mutation affecting brain development in girls. The mutation has caused Anna to become fully dependent on others for her day-to-day care. The Guess’ bathroom no longer fit their needs as Anna needed to be lifted in and out of the bathtub.

Bonnie and Bob Zak’s story is one we’ll never forget. The Zak’s met in El Paso Texas where Bob was stationed. They met on a blind date that was set up by Bonnie’s brother who was also stationed in El Paso. They dated for five days and over the course of the next 12 months, they exchanged hundreds of letters with each other. When Bob returned to Wisconsin, they wed. In 2002, Bob was diagnosed with two types of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he then had a stem cell transplant. In 2010 he was diagnosed with leukemia. Following his battle with leukemia, he developed prostate cancer in 2015 which he received radiation for. In July of 2016 he received the news that he was diagnosed with what would be his last cancer, pancreatic cancer. Heartbreakingly, Bob Zak passed away one week before they were set to receive their new bathroom remodel. We wanted to give Bonnie the bath that Bob had always wanted her to have, so we continued to work closely with Bonnie to make it happen.

On October 11, 2016 two Tundraland installation crews knocked on the doors of Adam Guess and Bonnie Zak to begin the remodel process. What they didn’t know, was that later that day they’d receive the surprise of a lifetime.

As we sat down months prior with both families to help design the bathrooms of their dreams, we quickly learned that both were lifelong fans of the Green Bay Packers. We knew this was an opportunity to make their day unforgettable. We teamed up with Green Bay Packers alumni LeRoy Butler and Mark Tauscher to surprise both recipients at their homes to help Tundraland crews with the remodels, sign autographs, and to simply be a part of Adam and Bonnie’s new beginnings.
