3 Reasons Not to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets

Picture of a beautiful kitchen after a cabinet refacing project.Does your kitchen need a facelift? Considering how much space your kitchen cabinets take up, one of the best ways to transform the entire room is to update the cabinetry. But if you’re not in the market for a full replacement—after all, a replacement can be expensive, and often isn’t necessary if the cabinets still function well—what can you do instead? Your first thought might be to apply a fresh coat of paint, but that probably isn’t the best idea. Below, we outline three reasons not to paint your kitchen cabinets.

1. Paint isn’t durable.

No matter how good of a job you do painting your cabinets, it’s likely that the paint will end up cracking, chipping, and scuffing (probably faster than you would have imagined). For a more long-lasting alternative, you may want to consider cabinet refacing, which involves applying a durable material to the existing boxes and replacing the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware.

2. Painting takes too much time.

Paint takes a long time to dry. And if you’re like many homeowners, you’ll likely need to apply two coats (plus a primer), essentially doubling your wait time. In the meantime, it will be difficult to use your kitchen, which will be frustrating if you typically cook all your meals at home (and expensive if you end up having to eat out instead!). When compared to painting, refacing generally takes much less time.

3. Paint doesn’t cover damage.

If your cabinet doors or drawers are scratched, chipped, or cracked, painting won’t do anything to cover that up (in fact, it might make the damage even more noticeable!). In that situation, refacing would be a better option, since it would involve replacing the doors and drawer fronts entirely.
