Goodbye, seasonal depression—the sun is back, and it’s here to stay! If 2020 has taught us to appreciate anything, it’s time spent outdoors and time spent with family. This life lesson has not only been carried in our hearts but has also translated into many 2021 design trends! In this article, we’re taking a closer look at these designs, highlighting our three outdoor favorites:
1. Inviting Outdoor Living Areas
Gatherings had a very different definition in 2020—many resorted to spending time with family outdoors to maintain social distancing mandates. This change has increased the use of outdoor living areas tenfold in 2021. The idea is to create an inviting outdoor space for all to enjoy; it’s basically a second living room. These patios or backyard areas emphasize comfort and are designed to entertain. You’ll see a lot of comfortable seating arrangements that center around a fire pit, an outdoor media center, or water feature.
2. Outdoor Cooking/Grilling Stations
Since there’s been an uptick in outdoor gatherings, many homeowners are investing in outdoor cooking or grilling stations—some are even incorporated into the deck! These “outdoor kitchens” make it easy to host outdoor celebrations and can add value to a home.
3. Warm-Toned Decks & Aluminum Railings
Contrasting materials and colors are another outdoor design trend to consider this new year. While you don’t want to take away from the general splendor of nature in your backyard, decks should still be designed as an extension of your home—aesthetically pleasing and functional. In 2021, warm-toned decks that mirror nature are contrasted with aluminum or iron deck railing to achieve a sense of balance and class.
